The lesser known victims of the MLB steroid scandal

The whole steroid scandal seems to be in full swing(no pun intended) lately. With Jose Canseco's book pointing fingers, many people are in an uproar as to what the future of baseball will be. Amidst the turmoil of steroid users and the coaches who supposedly "knew" what was going on, there exists a small group of people that were greatly affected by steroid use: The people who got second.

SI.com has a great story about Mike Greenwell who was the runner-up AL MVP in 1988. Who won the honors that year? Why, none other than Mr. Canseco. How would that feel. Greenwell plays a clean game and has a great season. Conseco juices up and takes the honors. I can definitely understand why Greenwell is pissed. He has a right to be. Sure, Canseco looks bad now, but that doesn't give Greenwell the feeling of winning the MVP award. Greenwell stated:
"He reaped a lot of rewards and a lot of benefits for being on an illegal drug and probably took something away from me that I never got to feel. So does it bother me? Absolutely."
What about all the other Mike Greenwell's in the league? All those guys who finished second to those who used performance enhancing drugs, what about them? This could, or should, cause a major look into the latest records and an investigation to whether or not they were legitimate. For all we know, Roger Maris should still be the single season home run record holder. If I was his family and found out that the record had been beaten by a juiced up player, I wouldn't acknowledge that record being broken.

So to all the Mike Greenwell's out there: I feel sorry for you, and I hope that one day you will get the honors that you deserve.
